AIG’s underwriting business for Lloyd’s of London, Talbot, had developed an internal innovation capability but needed refreshing for its next phase of growth. There was an opportunity to develop a more customer / user-centric approach and also to bring the wider organization on board in practical ways. We were challenged to assist in bringing to life, in prototype format, a solution that their customers would actually use and which would provide commercial benefits to the business.
Alongside this, Talbot asked us to provide tools and training which would leave behind an innovation legacy. Within the innovation team, this meant working alongside them in collaboration to utilize the Ninety process and mindset to create a long-lasting impact. Around the wider organization, this meant providing a greater understanding of innovation goals and processes as well as a method through which to be involved, both in delivering results and being trained in tools and techniques.
Solution
Drawing on our 123 Framework®, our Lab in a Box® capability and innovation experience, we delivered a 4-workstream plan over three months that covered:
- Execution: taking a proposition through from the ideation stage to clickable prototype (stage 2)
- Lab in a box: training the innovation team on important mindset, skills, and frameworks to support developing ideas as well as an insight on the optimal set up for an internal innovation function and the appropriate governance for it
- Innovation Healthcheck: providing a benchmark of innovation within the organization as a whole and recommendations of targeted interventions to improve maturity levels
- Training modules: educating the wider organization on innovation mindset, goals and tools to ensure that innovation was not exclusive to the innovation team
Benefits
The work with Ninety allowed Talbot to develop a solution to prototype format that their customers were excited about and was relevant to their needs. It also provided commercial opportunities both in revenue growth and efficiency savings, both in the short term and as a longer-term.
The rounded focus that Ninety brought on the desirability, feasibility, and viability meant that the proposition was developed with all relevant functions considered – meeting a customer need, technically achievable and financially viable. Customers were an integral part of the project at each stage.
Through the 123 Framework®, training modules, and project as a whole, Ninety engaged with over 70% of the organization, spreading an innovation mindset and leaving behind a ‘customer-centric’ approach that has enhanced the team and left a real momentum regarding what the organization is capable of.
