Generali – Building an innovation capability ecosystem
We were challenged by Generali, one of the world’s largest life, health and personal lines insurers, to support the development of an innovation ecosystem, that would unlock the potential of over 70,000 staff and 150,000+ distributors, across the 50+ countries in which they operate.
In a highly complex, diverse and decentralized group, where innovation is a key pillar of the group strategy, we were engaged to develop an approach that would make innovation accessible and an effective agent for change, to everyone working across Generali’s global business.
Using Ninety’s Innovation ABC™ framework, we embarked upon a six-month program of innovation ecosystem development.
Beginning with in-depth business immersion, we identified the key innovation opportunities at Generali, and collaborating with a core internal team from Generali’s head office, developed an innovation strategy, operating model and governance framework, plus a long-term vision for accelerating innovation right across the group.
Once these ‘foundation’ elements had been established, we launched focused innovation activities to begin to ‘make innovation happen’, including a flagship ‘global innovation fund’, an international innovation community of experts, innovation leadership board, and a tailored innovation methodology and toolkit to enable innovation practitioners to innovate more effectively.
With a roadmap of further key activities stretching across the coming years, Generali now has a clear and cohesive innovation approach that will realize the vision of democratized innovation across their global business.
The journey towards making innovation accessible and effective is clear, underway, and already having a positive impact.
Alongside enabling Generali to easily demonstrate the action being taken to deliver on the innovation pillar of the group strategy, initiatives such as the global innovation fund are unlocking an acute desire across the business for making innovation happen.
In the first six-week funding round, 50+ locally generated innovation initiatives from 18 separate countries requested funding support from the global innovation fund, to help accelerate the delivery of bold, early-stage and collaborative innovation initiatives.
This demonstrates validation that the injection of appropriate innovation capabilities and resources can make strategically-aligned innovation happen on a global scale.
“Generali has worked with Ninety to shape our global vision and structures for innovation. Their understanding of what mechanisms for innovation work best in insurance has boosted our speed and confidence in our innovation strategy.”
