Case study · Aviva

From idea to pitch in eight weeks.

Aviva could gather ideas easily enough. The hard part — turning raw ideas into something worth backing — is the eight weeks they brought us in for.

Collecting ideas is the easy part. Developing them into something you'd pitch to the board is the work.

The problem

Aviva wanted to encourage sustainable innovation from within, and launched an idea challenge to surface it. But a challenge generates raw ideas — it doesn't develop them.

Employees had energy and good instincts; what they lacked was the structure, coaching and customer input to turn a spark into a proposition worth an executive's time.

An idea challenge starts the work. It doesn't finish it.

What we did

Ninety partnered with Aviva to deliver the Idea Developers programme — an eight-week experience built to take ideas all the way to a pitch.

  • 01Taught by doing. Expert-led webinars and ideation sessions, paired with a platform of daily missions, so people learned by developing their own ideas.
  • 02Grounded it in customers. Built-in customer feedback and coaching kept every idea honest about whether real people actually wanted it.
  • 03Ended with a real pitch. The programme culminated in a Dragon's Den-style pitch to Aviva's Executive Team — a genuine decision, not a certificate.

The outcome

Over eight weeks, the programme turned a mixed cohort into confident innovators.

20+ employees equipped with new innovation skills — with six ideas reaching the executive pitch and winning concepts moving into development.

Beyond the ideas themselves, it reinforced Aviva's commitment to sustainability and to innovation that comes from its own people.

In their words

The Idea Developers programme was brilliant at bringing together different people from different backgrounds, uniting as a team behind a mission.

The takeaway

Ideas are cheap. Development is the value.

Any company can run an idea challenge. The return comes from what happens next — the coaching, customer testing and structure that turn a wall of sticky notes into six ideas an executive team will actually back.
